Injury plagued Owen Hargreaves is on the verge of signing a shock deal to join Manchester City.
The 30-year-old was released by Manchester United at the end of the 2010-11 campaign, after making only 26 starts for the Premier League champions since moving from Bayern Munich in July 2007 for £20.2 million.
The Manchester Evening News reveals that the 42-times capped England international has underwent a medical at the Bridgewater Hospital, and may be signed on transfer deadline day.
The Calgary born man refused an offer to join West Brom earlier in the summer, and Tottenham have also been linked with a move for him of late.
Despite the obvious injury concerns that City fans will harbour, Joleon Lescott believes the signing would benefit the club.
“It is only going to be good for City if he signs,” the defender told The Guardian.
“I’ve worked with Owen at England level and he is a great professional. People ask if it represents a gamble but the club know what they are doing, Owen knows what he is doing. He is still a good player.
“He hasn’t played as much as he would have liked over the last couple of seasons but the medical team we have is very good and very strong. If we can get him fit, I’m sure it won’t be very long before he is back to his best. He will be a player with a point to prove after his injuries,” the former Everton man concluded.
