If it’s isn’t the place where legends are born, it’s certainly a league where the world’s greatest want to test themselves in at some point throughout their careers.
From Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominance at Manchester United to Claudio Ranieri’s magical achievements at Leicester City, managers have been some of the most celebrated figures in the Premier League over the years.
But who reigns supreme as the most efficient when it comes to points won per match? Here we take a look at the top 25 most efficient managers in Premier League history, and the leading bunch may just surprise you a little…
25. John Gregory, 1.48 Points per Match
Gregory managed 161 matches over five years in the Premier League, with Aston Villa and Derby County.
After departing Derby following the 2002-03 campaign, the former English midfielder later returned to manage Queens Park Rangers (2006-08) and later Crawley Town (2013-15). He now manages Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League.
Long gone from England’s top-flight, Gregory’s 1.48 points per match still ranks him among the top-25 managers of all-time.
24. Frank Clark, 1.49 Points per Match
Following his playing days at Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, Clark took his talents to the touchline and earned 145 points over three seasons managing Nottingham Forest from 1994-97.
Clark later spent parts of two seasons managing Manchester City in the Championship before serving as Chairman for Nottingham Forest from 2011-2013.
He finished his Premier League managerial career averaging 1.49 points per match.
23. Kevin Keegan, 1.55 Points per Match
The two-time Ballon d’Or winner spent nine seasons managing Newcastle and Manchester City in the Premier League after his playing career.
Keegan’s greatest successes came during league title seasons with each club in the Championship, but his teams earned 413 points in 267 Premier League matches and Keegan was instrumental in delivering City their ultimate promotion back into the top-flight.
Over his nine seasons in the Premier League, Keegan’s teams averaged 1.55 points per match.
22. Ronald Koeman, 1.56 Points per Match
Before assuming the manager role with Dutch National team, Koeman built upon his long managerial career in club football with four seasons spent in England with Southampton and Everton. The three-time Manager of the Month left the Premier League in 2017 with a record of 55-27-41.
Though his time in England was filled with ups and downs, Koeman averaged 1.56 points per match over his 123 matches on the touchline.
21. David O’Leary, 1.56 Points per Match
O’Leary’s 262-match Premier League managerial career featured time with Leeds and Aston Villa. The owner of Arsenal’s club-record in appearances with 722, the Irishman made a brief return to managing in 2010 with Abu Dhabi-based club Shabab Al Ahli.
O’Leary’s earned 1.56 points per match in the Premier League.
20. Sir Bobby Robson, 1.59 Points per Match
The English football legend’s managerial career spanned five decades before coming to a close at Newcastle in 2004. Though the six-year stint with the Magpies was his only and final job managing in the Premier League, Robson made his mark with 69 wins in 189 matches, and a pair of top-four finishes.
Under Robson from 1999-2004, Newcastle averaged 1.59 points per match.
19. Gerard Houllier, 1.67 Points per Match
The French manager won three domestic cups, an FA Charity Shield and two UEFA Cups during six seasons with Liverpool from 1998-2004.
Houllier later returned to the Premier League for a single season in 2010, taking over at Aston Villa following the resignation of Martin O’Neil.
Now managing Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, Houllier holds an impressive mark of 1.67 points per match during his time in England.
18. Brendan Rodgers, 1.67 Points per Match
In taking over for Claude Puel at Leicester City in February, Rodgers is now in charge of his third Premier League club.
Results for the Northern Irish manager have been spotty in England’s top-flight with only one top-four finish in five full seasons, but Rodgers remains among the most consistent point-earning managers in league history.
Over time spent with Swansea City, Liverpool and now Leicester City, Rodgers has yielded 1.66 points per match.
17. Claudio Ranieri, 1.68 Points per Match
The 2015-16 Manager of the Season delivered Leicester City their miracle league title in 2016, and with time spent at Chelsea and Fulham as well, Raneri remains among the most accomplished managers in the league to date.
Recently appointed to manage Roma following his February sacking at Fulham, the Italian manager still maintains an impressive mark of 1.68 points per match over his seven seasons in the Premier League.
16. Roy Evans, 1.70 Points per Match
Replacing Graeme Souness in the middle of the 1993-94 campaign, Evans brought stability to Anfield during the club’s early history in the Premier League and delivered four-consecutive top-four finishes from 1994-98.
Retired from management following time with Fulham (2000) and Swindon (2001), Evans’ 1.70 points per match still rank him among the most successful managers in Premier League history.
