Tottenham have been transformed since Mauricio Pochettino came to the club. The days of Spurs being a selling club appear to be over as they’ve reportedly (as per Sky Sports) agreed a whopping £65 million deal for Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele. Of course, the next step for Spurs is to hold onto Toby Alderweireld after recent interest from Roma, via TuttoMercatoWeb.
The Belgian defender has had his fair share of contract disputes with the Lilywhites and it has looked for a long time that he’ll leave Tottenham at the end of his contract. His deal runs until 2020, though, and his recent comments in an interview with Dernière Heure gave Spurs fans hope of his stay.
It all looks to be falling into place for the £36m rated ace, via Transfermarkt, and Tottenham. The Belgian is currently 30-years-old and is arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League so the Lilywhites have no urgency to sell, and with the player himself coming out and claiming he’s still going to be a Spurs player, it couldn’t be more ideal.
All that the club has to do is fend off the interest that could potentially surface in the next few weeks. Spurs fans can also take some comfort in the fact that the TMW article claims Real Betis’ Marc Bartra is Roma’s first choice anyway.
Regardless of whether or not Alderweireld is a club’s first or last choice centre-half, the point is that Daniel Levy cannot afford to sanction his exit and it would mean a new man would have to come in. The Evening Standard named the Belgian as Spurs’ best defender back in February and talked up just how crucial he was to Spurs’ title challenge and Champions League trophy pursuit, so it really would be silly to sell him.
Surely Spurs wouldn’t dream of potentially ruining a promising situation by cashing in on one of their best.
